The United States Telemark Ski Association (USTSA) announced today the addition of a USTSA Freeski Division. “USTSA is very excited to be joining together with telemark freeskiing competitions in order to help grow and develop the entire spectrum of tele skiing in the United States. While USTSA has its origins in the race aspect of telemark, we look forward to working together with the telemark freeskiers to help spread the sport,” said USTSA president Garrett Long.
To accomplish this task the organization has tapped long time freeski competitor, former pro tele athlete and advocate J.T. Robinson for the new position of Director of Telemark Freeski. “Being a competitor and then a freeskiiing judge myself for over a decade, I’ve seen the recent growth of participants at the events, especially the junior category. That’s helped me realize the need for a governing body to help organize and push these events into the future,” Robinson said.
Robinson will also be joined by long-time telemark event organizer Nate Greenberg who has been named the Director of Freeski Judging and Officiating. “J.T. and Nate bring many years of Telemark and Freeski Telemark Competition experience both to the Board and to the Organization and we look forward to working with them to develop a broader circuit of Freeski Telemark events in the coming years,” said Long.
So what exactly does this mean for competitive telemark freeskiers? According to Robinson, “One of the first things we’ll be implementing is a new ranking system for the freeski athletes. This ranking system is the perfect way for us to track competitors’ results as we work towards a future series of freeski events.”
To kick things off this season the USTSA has signed on with the Freeheel Life Cup, the one existing big mountain competition, that will take place in March 2017. The Freeheel Life Cup has become the premiere event in North America and draws competitors from the junior through adult level from all around the country. “I couldn’t be more stoked to see this all coming together,” said Josh Madsen, Owner of Freeheel Life. “Our sport has needed this infrastructure for a long time and J.T. is the perfect person to drive this thing into the future. The Cup is going to be incredible this year and we couldn’t be happier to be a part of the growth of telemark freeskiing.”
According to Long, “With this combination, USTSA is well positioned for continued growth in terms of number of events, membership, and most importantly continuing to have a good time!”
