It didn’t really come as a surprise to learn that SCOTT had discontinued production of their kids telemark boot, the G-Rex. Rumors of the scarcity of kids telemark boots hardly qualifies as news. Even when they were available, nobody knew.
The real news was over 20 years ago when John Schweitzer convinced Garmont to make a kids telemark boot. His rationale was too simple to deny, and it was also too hard to believe it would come to pass. But it did because, as Schweitzer emphatically insisted, “if you can’t provide a way for the next generation to at least try telemark, you can’t expect it to survive. You HAVE to focus on kids if you want a future.” As if that wasn’t obvious enough, he added with extra sarcasm, “DUH!”
That’s not the only casualty in the telemark world. Production of the Excursion, a 75mm light touring boot ceased production three years ago, but it took until 2021 for the stock to run out. There are no plans for Scott Sports to produce any more Excursions or kids boots.
Lack of marketing in what remains of Scott’s telemark boot line suggests a terminal future. I hope I’m wrong.
