One of the characteristics I’ve attributed to the members of the Telemark tribe is the ability to think independently. Taken to an extreme it is possible to go too far, but that independent streak seems to be an intrinsic part of being a free heel skier. I don’t know if it is a result of the independent leg action of the telemark turn, or the permanently unlocked heel, or if those are simply symptoms of an unconventional spirit. Either way, one of the hall marks of die hard Telemarkers is their desire to tinker with their gear. Or . . .
