From their beginning in 2005, The Powderwhores produced arguably some of the most important telemark movies of the last decade. Their movies were a mix of fun, bc tele skiing and jokes. They never took themselves too seriously and their audience loved it. They eventually moved on from telemark specific movies towards the end and decided to call it quits in 2015 after a decade of making their brand of snow-sliding movies.
So where are they now? One of the Howell brothers, Jonah, is out to keep his hat in the ring of snowsports through his new website GearGospel.com.
“The grass is always greener on the other side. We closed the doors at Powderwhore for several reasons but a large part was I thought I could just get a 9-5 job, make good money, become a weekend warrior and not feel stressed about running my own business,” said Gear Gospel’s Jonah Howell. “That sounded appealing to me. The reality I soon found out was I was not really qualified for many jobs and the pay offered was less than I had been making with Powderwhore. I found myself without work and wondering what to do. With a bunch of time on my hands and lots of ideas I slowly started creating Gear Gospel.”
According to him, his goal with the site is to expose people gear that is made in the USA, recycled/environmentally friendly gear, independently owned/ family run gear and truly innovative gear. “We do that through our Giveaways and Gear pages,” said Howell. “If the site can also help someone understand their gear better and save them some money, I would be psyched.”
They currently have telemark gear on the site but haven’t gotten to telemark gear guides yet. Jonah went on to say, “The really cool thing about tele gear is that you have great companies like 22 Designs and Voile making quality stuff right here in the USA.”
