Telemark Skier Magazine to have new ownership Freeheel Life Industries and Height of Land Publications agree to sale
Salt Lake City, UT, January 18, 2012 — Height of Land Publications (HOL) and Freeheel Life Industries have tentatively agreed to terms that will lead to the sale of 10-year-old Telemark Skier Magazine. “Telemark skiing has always been something we believed strongly in,” says HOL editorial and creative director Adam Howard. When HOL merged Couloir and Backcountry Magazines in 2006 it relaunched Telemark Skier, which had been dormant at Couloir for a year. “We still think tele skiers deserve their own media and Madsen has the tools to deliver.”
HOL hired Josh Madsen in 2009 to edit Telemark Skier. “Josh has a unique skill set,” Howard says. “Madsen really gave us the fourth element with film.”
For the last three seasons Telemark Skier has produced two print publications, a website and social media. And, it has also created and toured freeheel movies.
According to Howard the rigors of producing both magazines plus movies were difficult to manage. “As the films became a bigger part of what we did, it became pretty apparent that Telemark Skier needed to become its own company,” he says.
Madsen couldn’t be happier about this new opportunity.
“I learned a lot about creating quality content at HOL,” he says. “But, I’m really looking forward to putting my stamp on the business itself and continuing to reach more and more tele skiers.”
Madsen says his plan will include moving from two print magazines to six digital editions. “Customers will have access to three times as much content as before for the same price,” he says. “The magazine will be available to customers in formats for all personal computers and mobile devices.”
Current Telemark Skier subscribers will not only get the new Telemark Skier for the length of their current subscription, but they’ll also get Backcountry which will include more telemark-specific content than it has recently.
Howard and Madsen agreed that serving the subscriber with both products is a no-brainer.
